Jessie

February 28, 1995 - December 11, 2009

I'd known for about a week that today was the day, but it wasn't something I much wanted to talk about. As weird as it was to have so much advance notice, it gave me time to come to terms with it. I really struggled with knowing that we were going to put Jessie down today. I wasn't sure it was really her time. She was alert, and happy, and eating well, but physically her poor old body was failing. I wanted some sign, some look, some assurance that it was really "time." I felt that from her yesterday, and I feel at peace with the decision now.

I knew Jessie for half my life, which seems just totally wild. We got her as a puppy when I was a sophomore in high school, and a year later we got her little sister Nellie, who died almost exactly a year ago. Jessie was a good dog. I don't mean for that to sound understated, it's really the best compliment I can think to give her. When you think of "good dog" think of Jessie. She was a dog with many aspects to her personality. Loyal. A little aloof, affectionate but not overly cuddly, smart, focused, happy, sneaky...

She was my brother's hunting dog when she was younger, a job she excelled at with no real training. Somewhat later in life, she was my hunting buddy, though we were after rodents and there was no retrieving involved! If there was an award for the world's best rat hunter, Jessie would get it. That dog loved to hunt, but she was as gentle and trustworthy as could be with my birds.

She used to run away every chance she would get, and that's probably the thing about her that annoyed me the most. I swear that dog could hear a gate open from miles away, and if she could sneak through it she would. You'd see her stop and look back over her shoulder to see if anyone was watching. She feigned deafness long before she really did become deaf, trotting off across the neighbor's property pretending not to hear me calling her back.

In the last year, after Nellie died, I felt like I really got to know Jessie on an entirely new level, and I'm grateful for that opportunity. She tended to be overshadowed by Nellie's personality, so getting to know the old Jessie for her own self was wonderful. She was never house-trained, and was always a "ranch dog" but I started sneaking her in the house sometimes when I was here alone, and gradually she spent more and more time inside. I enjoyed having her around, and she seemed to like to hang out when I was working in the studio. Unfortunately in the last while she became very accident prone as she lost some control of her functions, and she had to spend her time outside again. I missed having her around in here!

In the end, though her spirits were high, those old legs and hips were failing fast, and it wasn't fair for her to be alone outdoors in the cold winter. I would say she died while she still had her dignity.

We had a fine day today, she and I. It was gray and drizzly outside, not exactly right for frolicking in the yard. So I put a blanket on the floor next to my engraving bench, and she spent the day snoozing in the studio, toasty and warm. She ate the pepperoni off the pizza I had for lunch. My break times were spent flopped on the floor next to her, thanking her for being a good dog.

I am going to miss that dog so much. It already seems weird that she isn't there, and that she won't ever be there again. I hate this part of owning pets. I hate loving and losing, but all the years of joy they bring to our lives overshadow that in the end. I believe she's back with Nellie now, maybe they're out hunting somewhere in the cosmos, young bodied and healthy again.

Rest in peace Jessie, there's a bunch of people missing you.

and other stuff too

Yikes, I'm trying to catch up on everything! It's going to take more than just tonight.

So here's a bunch of pics:

I have vampire hands. Have you seen that movie Twilight? Apparently vampires have cold hands. Thus, I have vampire hands. So for a significant part of the year I can be found working with these stylish gloves on. They are relics of childhood, pink cotton gloves. I cut the fingers off. It helps a lot.

I am going to photograph this particular leaf every day. Every year I mean to photograph the tree every day while it's changing colors, but invariably I think of this too late, so I'll try to get one leaf. It's a scarlet oak (I think?)

Jessie, the reluctant babysitter. That's the house chicken, she's grown lots! She flew onto Jessie by herself, I had nothing to do with it other than I ran for my camera:

jam!

Last call for strawberry jam! $6 per half pint, $12 shipping up to 6 jars, US only.

First and last call for APRICOT JAM!!!! This is a favorite of a lot of people. $5 per half pint, $12 shipping up to 6 jars, US only. They are quite all of a sudden ripe in the last, uh, day. Probably in a week they'll be gone. Eeek! Wish it lasted longer!

Hey local peeps, want some apricots? You-pick. Let me know....

It was 109 today. I hate summer! I spent much of the day at a Gypsy Horse open house near here with JC. She raises Gypsy horses. It was kind of a lesson in how NOT to host an open house. Lesson #1 is make sure people can find your house. The mailbox with the street address "was taken down years ago." The driveway was actually down a road other than that on which the street address is for (could they mention that perhaps?) No signs, no nothing, and the barn was tucked back over a hill so it wasn't like we could see the horses from the road. Had to call a few times before finally getting someone on the phone for directions. The host(s?) barely said a word to us, there was no pricing or info any of the horses. Thank goodness for the guy from England who was there, I really enjoyed listening to what he had to say about the horses and their history and what the differences are between the US and Europe and his opinion about a lot of the horses. That was cool.

It was so hot even the cat melted. ;-)

pictures today

It was a crappy hot day, but a lovely evening, so I went out and took some photos.

I spent the morning weed-whacking (or "weed-eating" which I guess is the more trendy term) around the barn and chicken coops. To my chagrin, I had to get my Yard Goddess neighbor to start the stupid thing. I simply do not have the magic touch with machinery, and the first time that contraption is used each year it's impossible for me to start. Makes me want to throw it on the ground and stomp on it, but of course that would not help matters much. As a general rule I'm a pretty patient person, but being unable to start the weed-whacker totally gets to me. So do busted hoses, water pipes, waterer valves, or anything of that nature (so a double whammy would be hacking a hose to smithereens with the weed-whacker, thankfully I did not do that today but I've sure done it before!)

I drew three out of four preliminary sketches for the next Colts. I can't quite wrap my brain around the fourth image (and I also can't really talk about it, sorry) but hopefully I'll figure out something soon. The other three look good, to me anyway. Hopefully my client will agree.

And I cut and sanded down a rough ugly slab of ivory into a nice pendant shape. I still have to do all the polishing, that'll take a while. Not my favorite part of the process... :-/ Ah, nothing like the small of ivory dust (eww, it stinks).

Pics!

Ye olde horse, Gwen. She's really looking old... and looks way different with her "feathers" shaved off!

Hmm, what's that behind the waterer float?

A tree frog!!! (Yes, I love amphibians).

Ye olde dog, Jessie, age 14.

These Bachelor Buttons are growing out of the compost box, and they are as tall as me. No joke.

What's that white stuff all over the ground? (side note, anyone want to buy that fixer-upper boat?)

Ugh, it's cottonwood seeds. They are everywhere, get into everything, make a huge mess, and induce some serious allergies. *achoo!*

I'm sllooowwwly going through my blog entries and trying to "tag" more things, as you might notice. It'll take a while. Partly it's so I can track some things, but also to make it easier to find certain subjects and follow certain threads.
